Interactive Map of GF Restaurants in the Portland Vancouver Metro Area

LAST UPDATED: 07.29.08

Please remember that when dining out we cannot guarentee that you will have a gluten free experience. The resturants listed above were recommended by members of our group who have had a good GF dining experience. Many of these establishments have very knowledgeable staff and work hard to keep us safe. Some of these restaurants have gluten free menus and some do not. Please always notify your waitstaff either way that you cannot eat gluten and discuss the safest options to avoid both cross contamination and direct contact with gluten. If you have a poor experience either by being glutened or disrespectful waiters please let us know. When we hear back too many times about Celiacs getting glutened we remove that restaurant from our lists.
THANKS AND HAPPY EATING!

Hey there, I just wanted to thank you for this list! I live in NE Portland, and would like to add that Vita Café on Alberta street has a lot of GF options. Also, Random Order Coffeehouse bakes fresh GF muffins daily!

Hi. I just ate at the Vita Cafe this morning and must let everyone know to proceed with EXTREME caution. I think it's great that they are trying to offer options for us, but it was quite obvious that they really haven't done their homework on cross -contamination. The waitress was offended when I politely asked if they could scrape the grill before cooking my food..she said "there's no way, they're too busy".

(continued)...then she asked a different waitress to help us, quite obviously because I was being "difficult". They gave us our food and our bill and never once checked back with us..If you have celiac, like I do, I highly recommend staying away, at least until they do their homework and train the staff. Seitan and the "GF" potatoes are cooked in the same oil!!!!

Monteaux's in Beaverton also offers a gluten-free menu. It is small, but offers a variety of appetizers, salads, and main courses. Hopefully, they will soon be able to add gluten-free items to their fabulous looking monthly country-specific menus!

This is a GREAT list!

Please also add Nutshell, the vegan place. It's inexpensive and they're accommodating to celiacs.

I've also had great stuff at Sweet Pea Vegan Bakery at 12th and Stark. They do a phenomenal layer cake -- my favorite is the lemon cake with strawberry frosting. Great brownies, too.

Great list! Also, the Bob's Red Mill store in Milwaukie serves freshly-made gluten-free sandwiches that are delicious.

oh yeah, and one more: Vindalho on SE 21st is very sensitive to gluten issues, and Indian uses very little wheat, so it's been a great place for me. I've been there many times and I've never been glutened. I have to be careful not to get anything with yogurt, but they've been able to steer me away from those dishes. There are still many options. Oh yeah, and gooood food....

Thank you for this! I have a friend with Celiacs who is coming to visit me. I'm excited to take her to a restaurant with gluten free options!

Great map. I ate at Nutshell as well and while we had a very nice meal, I would hardly agree with the commenter who called it inexpensive. Dinner for three was over 85 bucks...and although the food was very good, and the chef incredibly accomodating to gluten issues, I couldn't say we all felt it was worth the price, nor consistently fantastic. Still, one to add to the list, as he does seem to truly understand gf and cross contamination and it was easy to order - that staff knows their stuff.

Thank you! Thank you! Please add Soup Thyme (or is it Thyme for Soup?) Anyway, it is on Cornell and Bethany behind the Burger King. Small, but delicious soups and always gluten-free offerings!

Hi,
I just wanted to tell you how invaluable this restraunt map has been to me. I have to eat out with the boss and clients frequently. Choosing a place that will inconspicuously accomodate my celiac concerns has been difficult up until now. Thank you thank you thank you!

Also, you will want to add DiPrima Dolci to your list. It is an Italian bakery and restraunt over on the corner of N. Denver and N. Killingsworth, open daily for lunch, and Fridays/Saturday's for dinner.

I was nervous going there at first, but Pat, the owner, assured me that she would take good care of me if I would just try a few GF things she had in the bakery case. And boy am I glad I did! Her traditional pinoles and meringues are wonderful and clearly marked GF. BTW: she also specializes in traditional Italian wedding cakes -that include GF options. Less expensive in general than Papa Hayden's or Peice of Cake...

She also offers a lunch/dinner menu that includes some GF offerings. And, her brother, the cook, has been more than happy to accomodate any of my instructions or concerns cheerfully. Sometimes the staff is a little slow to understand, but Pat is in the process of training them. When in doubt, Pat and Robin(Pat's husband) are always on hand and ready to serve. Good coffee too! And beautiful garden seating in the back patio.

Thanks again!

Hartwell's in downtown Milwaukie has a menu where items are individually labelled as to whether they're gluten-free and/or vegan, and the food was excellent. The wait-staff I had was sensitive to the issue.

They do caution on the menu that the kitchen is not GF, so I can't speak to cross-contamination. But I had a good experience, and I've suggested it to some of my fellow GF sufferers.
